Up-and-coming rapper Young Slo-Be identified as man killed in Manteca apartment shooting
A man killed in a Manteca shooting Friday was an up-and-coming rap music artist from the Central Valley, according to Thizzler On The Roof, an Oakland-based media company that promoted his work.
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man killed as 29-year-old Disean Victor, better known to his fans as Young Slo-Be. The artist had just recently gone viral on TikTok for his song “I Love You,” which has had more than 19.6k videos made with the sound.
Police found the rapper’s body in an apartment near West Center Street and Trevino Avenue on Friday morning. Fans took to social media to praise his music and express their sadness about his death.
In what would be his last post on his verified Instagram profile, Young Slo-Be is seen visiting a Stockton business where his sweatshirts and T-shirts were sold. The shop’s owner told KCRA 3 that outside his store Friday morning, people waited to purchase Young Slo-Be merchandise.
One fan, who asked not to be identified, said he appreciated the rapper’s music about Stockton.
“He rapped about the streets, basically like, how it is … growing up right here, like, the struggle,” the fan said.
Young Slo-Be often connected with fans around town according to those who knew him.
“He was super humble to the whole community. That’s why a lot of people liked him,” the music fan said. “A lot of people liked him because … he never tried to act like he was better than anybody.”
Lawren Edwards, who identified himself as a cousin of Young Slo Be, said the artist will be missed in the Stockton community.
“Slo was real talented … a real good dude,” Edwards said. “Always promote and prosper, being independent, self-sufficient, driven by, you know, the struggle.”
In a statement to KCRA 3, music promoter Thizzler On The Roof wrote:
Fans told KCRA 3 they are upset Young Slo-Be’s continued rise in the music industry was cut short.
“I feel like he had so much potential,” the Young Slo-Be fan said. “He was like an up and coming artist… he could have been something so much bigger, too.”
Officials do not believe this was a random act of violence, and the shooter is still on the loose.
