A new exhibition is coming to the Museum of London and it puts the spotlight on one of the UK’s proudest exports: grime.
Co-curated by Roony ‘Risky’ Keefe alongside the museum, the exhibition is called Grime Stories: From The Corner To The Mainstream, and it uses video footage, photography, and trinkets to trace grime’s history right back to its East London roots. It will also feature extensive contributions from grime MC Jammer, whose legendary basement was the backdrop for so many historic Lord Of The Mics clashes as well as being the lab where some of the scene’s most iconic riddims were cooked up.
The museum has also commissioned some original films for the exhibit, including clips from Skepta and Slimzee, and tributes to Rinse FM.
“Grime is a culture in itself and uniquely houses London’s attitude and DIY spirit,” says Risky. “In two decades, it has given so much back, not only to the city, but to an international audience. Grime’s influence has changed music forever.
“This Museum of London display makes me feel proud to see grime’s legacy acknowledged, knowing how far the scene has come and how essential it is to London’s culture. Grime continues to push boundaries and Grime Stories: from the corner to the mainstream will bring its history and pioneering work to a whole new audience.”
Jammer adds: “It’s official: Museum Of London—we’re about to do the mazza! Just know it’s about to be mad. Big up my guy, Risky Roadz—let’s go. This one’s for the culture! We really do this.”
The exhibition opens June 17.
